November 05 - Laser Safety Software Training
- Summary - This meeting focused on overviews and training for software available to NASA Laser Safety. OCHMO hosted renowned laser safety experts who provided insights into the LAZAN/SKYZAN, Laser Hazard Evaluator, and LHAZ laser safety codes. Mr. Bill Ertle, President of Rockwell Laser Industries and Mr. Pat Cogan, Product Sales Manager provided training on LAZAN and SKYZAN codes. Mr. Wesley Marshall, Manager of the Laser/Optical Radiation Program at the US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Maintenance, trained on problem solving with the Laser Institute of America Laser Hazard Evaluator program. He went through each of the three rules with both 100% and 70% transmitting optics, then demonstrated how the classification can be reduced by going to a series of three round bursts every second, rather than a continuous PRF, making the system a Class 3R system instead of Class 3B. Mr. Marshal also showed how to create custom printed reports of the parameters and analysis. Robert J. Thomas, Ph.D., a research physicist with the US Air Force Research Laboratory provided training on LHAZ 5.0 which was developed by the Department of Defense. Dr. Thomas solved problems for a diode pumped solid state continuous wave laser and a pulsed infrared laser. LHAZ is available to NASA Laser Safety Officers.
