What is the Surgeon General’s Prescription for Health?
In a
keynote address on March 13, 2000, then Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said:
We're serious about promoting healthy lifestyles. As important, if not more,
than our most sophisticated medical technology and our most medically advanced drugs,
is promoting healthy lifestyles among American people. If we can do that,
we can make a difference.
To achieve this healthy lifestyle he suggested a Prescription for Health:
- Moderate physical activity, 5 days a week, 30 minutes a day
- Avoid toxins - tobacco, illicit drugs, alcohol abuse
- Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
- Practice responsible sexual behaviors
To this simple, yet noteworthy, prescription we add:
-
Be a wise consumer of healthcare and its educational resources.
Programs that focus on self-care, smoking cessation, weight control, and stress
management are designed for such a consumer.
-
Make informative choices when choosing doctors, health insurance and
online health information.
-
Choose a healthy lifestyle that suits your individual
needs and do everything in moderation.
